2024 Scholarship Program

Education is an investment that will never depreciate.

The Travis L. Williams American Legion Post 65 of Phoenix, Arizona, provides services and support to the residents of Phoenix and surrounding communities and particularly those residing in the zip code areas 85040, 85041 and 85042.

 

The Scholarship Committee of Travis L. Williams Post 65 believes that the pursuit of education is the gateway to open opportunities for increased employability and earning potential and acts as a foundation for a productive life.

 

On behalf of the men and women of Travis L. Williams Post 65, we extend to interested parties an opportunity to apply for the 2024 Travis L. Williams Scholarship. Additionally, Post 65 pledges our commitment to assist selected applicants who plan to pursue or continue their pursuit of higher education at an accredited college, university, trade or vocational school.

In previous years, we have been able to award at least 3 applicants with scholarships in the amount of $1500 each!

Instructions for Candidates

For submission by mail: completed application and required documents must be mailed. For email submission: completed applications and required documents must be attached as MSWord/Google Docs documents or scanned in a PDF format, in ONE (1) PDF file. JPEG and GIF image formats will be rejected. The following are required to complete your application:

  • Applicant must be an eligible graduating high school Senior/GED recipient during the 2023-2024 school year who will be attending post-secondary or vocational/trade school in 2024 with a minimum GPA of 2.5.

  • Application form included here (pages 3, 4 and 5)

  • Official high school transcripts or GED Certificate

  • A 500-word essay on ONE of the topics described below (A or B or C)

  • Letter of recommendation on official letterhead from a teacher/guidance counselor/school administrator and/or employer (for GED)

  • Letter of recommendation on letterhead from a community service organization, community member or local government member

  • Signed Terms and Conditions/Release Form (Page 2)

  • Parent’s signature if a student is under 18 years old (Page 2)

  • Letter of introduction: One (1) page describing who you are, your accomplishments to date, your family background, and the degree/certificate to which you are seeking. Provide a summary of how you plan to use the scholarship if selected. Also, incorporate how this scholarship would benefit you in giving back to your community.
     

Essay Topics: Write a 500-word essay (typewritten) on one of the following topics:

A. What impact did the Buffalo Soldiers make in war and/or peacetime? Why is it necessary to pass this legacy on to future generations?

B. Provide examples of the historically significant contributions of the Travis L. Williams American Legion Post 65 to the community.

C. The Medal of Honor and the Congressional Gold Medal are very prestigious awards. Please provide a brief narrative regarding a Black American who received one of these honors and what can be learned from his/her life, efforts, and commitment to duty.
