Using QR Codes the Right Way

If you’ve ever asked, “Can we put a QR code on the website?” — you’re not alone. QR codes are everywhere these days, from restaurant menus to event flyers. They can be incredibly helpful tools for your American Legion Post — when used correctly. Let’s break down what QR codes are, what they’re good for, and when they’re not needed.


What is a QR Code?


A QR (Quick Response) code is a square barcode that you scan with your smartphone camera. When scanned, it instantly takes you to something digital, like:

  • A website

  • An event registration form

  • A donation page

  • A membership application

  • A calendar of events

Think of it as a shortcut — it saves someone from having to type a long web address.


When QR Codes Make Perfect Sense

QR codes are most useful in printed or physical spaces where people need a quick way to get online.

Great places to use QR codes:

  • Event posters and flyers

  • Parade banners or signs

  • Table tents at fish fries or breakfasts

  • Bulletin boards inside the Post

  • Mailers and newsletters

  • Business cards


👉 Example: A flyer for a pancake breakfast can include a QR code that takes people directly to the event details or RSVP page.


When QR Codes Do NOT  Make Sense

Here’s the big one: QR codes are not meant for websites.

If someone is already on your website, they’re already online. Asking them to scan a QR code from their phone while viewing the site on that same phone doesn’t work and creates confusion.


Avoid using QR codes on:

  • Your website pages

  • Email newsletters

  • Social media posts

  • Digital ads


👉 Instead of a QR code, just use a button or link that says: “Register Here” or “Donate Now.”


Why Overusing QR Codes Can Hurt Engagement

Too many QR codes — or using them in the wrong places — can:

  • Confuse visitors

  • Make materials look cluttered

  • Reduce clicks and participation

  • Signal outdated web practices

A clean, clear call-to-action is almost always better.


Best Practices for Legion Posts

If you decide to use a QR code, keep these tips in mind:

✅ Link to something helpful and mobile-friendly

✅ Test it before printing

✅ Make it large enough to scan easily

✅ Include a short description (“Scan for Event Details”)

✅ Use it only where scanning makes sense


The Bottom Line

QR codes are tools — not decorations. When used thoughtfully, they can help your Post connect with the community, increase event attendance, and make it easier for members to engage.


When in doubt, ask yourself one simple question:


“Does scanning this code make things easier for someone right now?”

If the answer is yes — use it. If not — a simple link or button is the better choice.
